Smoking is a lifestyle
The lifestyle of someone who is young, living on the edge and rebelling against what they know is not in their best interest. But hey, they're young. They have their whole life ahead of them. So if you ask them about their lifestyle as a young adult, they'll likely respond with an affirmation, "life is good". Now lets speed up the clock a little bit and see what their lifestyle looks like in 40 years. Now they are in their sixties and have smoked for 30 or 40 years.
A new study examined the effects of middle aged smoking on long term risk of impaired activities of daily living (ADL). Lets first define ADL - these are things we do everyday, like bathing, brushing our teeth, urinating/having a bowel movement in the toilet, combing your hair, etc. Most of us think we'll be doing that without any problems well into 80's. Then we hope to have a cute, young nurse change our Depends. The study looked at 2,200 people in 1980, then again in 1999. They found that smokers had a much higher risk for impairment of ADLs. This means it was harder for them to do the simple things of just existing. The odds ratio (risk) was even higher for those who smoked greater than 20 cigarettes per day.
That's the problem with smoking. When you're young and invincible, smoking only creates silent changes in your body. But the repeated affect of smoking every day for years on end, transform these previously unknown physiological changes into a stark ubiquitous reality. Breathing becomes labored, chest pains are present, infections simply come in waves, and you get on a first name basis with your emergency room charge nurse. Sure, some people are physiologically wired to be less affected by smoking, but as a general rule of statistics and experience, smoking does not improve your lifestyle as you age.
Active and passive smoking pose unique but preventable health risks to women. Exposure to tobacco smoke is known to affect reproductive hormones in women. Since these hormones are likely to play a role in causing premenstrual symptoms, it is plausible that smoking may increase the frequency and severity of symptoms. Some previous studies suggest that smoking may worsen premenstrual symptoms, however, results from other studies do not confirm these findings. Passive smoking has not been investigated as a risk factor for premenstrual symptoms, but may also increase the frequency and severity of symptoms.

There's a lot of help out there for people who want to stop smoking. Nowadays we have prescription medications available, nicotine replacement therapy, natural or herbal supplements to help, support groups, hypnosis and many more. While all or many of these treatment regiments can help you stop smoking or at least get through the rough parts of nicotine withdrawal, there is one resounding consistency between those who quit for good using any of the above methods and those who don't. People who quit and accompany this with a lifestyle change statistically have a much higher chance to stay smoke free forever. Changing your lifestyle means changing your habits, outlook on life, daily routine, and overall way you run your life. By changing these things from the bottom up, you are effectively erasing the hold smoking had on your life and eliminating behavior that triggers smoking and substituting it with healthy or positive habits.
When you stop-smoking, it is a good idea to tell your friends. This way you can enlist their support to help you stop-smoking. If you feel the urge for a cigarette, talk to one of your encouraging friends who will warn you off the cigarette. Friends like to be of use, so use them in this way. Promise to do the same thing for someone else as a way to pay back this debt.
Many people find that it is very difficult to go to a bar when you are trying to stop-smoking. Alcohol loosens your inhibitions and makes you want to do things that you know you should not. Try avoiding bars for a while or go to those that are smoke free. This is at least until you get over the one month hump where you can say that you are smoke free.
It takes 48 hours for the nicotine to get out of your system and the physical dependency on cigarettes to subside. Once this is over, you have only a psychological dependency on smoking cigarettes.
Make some lifestyle changes to help you stop-smoking by finding something to do with your hands while you are watching television or other times when you are normally smoking. You can try needlework, drawing, or even using a finger exercise ball to give you something to do when you are sitting there, aching for a cigarette.
Speaking of exercise, try incorporating exercise into your life once you stop-smoking. Many people who stop-smoking end up gaining weight after they quit. Cigarette cravings tend to feel like food cravings. Instead of eating, exercise.
Once you make up your mind to stop-smoking, make these changes in your lifestyle and you will see that you not only feel better about yourself, but you look better as well.
When attempting the cold turkey method, many people are not able to stop smoking permanently. It is not because the cold turkey method is ineffective but rather the person subconscious mind is left untrained. Thus, they keep struggling with cravings and withdrawal symptoms because their body thinks it needs cigarettes for to relax and focus.
A smoker does not not know why they smoke but can give reasons for smoking. These reasons may include relaxation, better focus, relief of boredom and enjoyment of social occasions. Although they seem powerful reasons, they are really myths and can be explained. All of these reasons related to perceived withdrawal symptoms.
In order to quit smoking permanently, you must realize that withdrawal occurs during an entire smoking life and not just when you quit. This is the only reason why smokers light next cigarette. Thus, it is obvious why nicotine replacement only prolongs the addiction. Nicotine patches and gums sell well for the same reason that cigarettes sell well.
