The Dangers of Chantix!
Chantix is a new drug from Pfizer that helps smokers quit their addiction and has been getting plenty of positive reviews since it was released back in 2006. One can hardly read a review of Chantix without the ex-smoker declaring it to be some sort of new God-sent miracle drug. However, despite the glowing positive reviews, as with most pharmaceuticals, there are side effects to be aware of. In other words, Chantix is not for everyone.
Chantix was shown to be quite effective as a smoking cessation treatment in clinical trials. In one clinical trial, it was seen that Chantix helped up to 51% people to quit smoking in 9-12 weeks and 12% people placed on placebo were able to stop smoking. This shows that Chantix helps more than half of the people to stop smoking. Chantix is even more effective than Zyban, another drug to stop smoking. In one comparative study, it was found that Chantix helped 44% people to stop smoking whereas Zyban helped only 30% of people. Chantix is even more effective in long term quitting because it facilitates abstinence more as compared to Zyban.
More than likely, you've heard of Chantix by now. Less commonly known as varenicline, Chantix is prescribed as a smoking cessation aid. The praises of Chantix include that it blocks the pleasant effects of nicotine on the human brain. Taken once or twice a day, while smoking or not, Chantix is said to rid you of any desire to light up. What could be better? I won't even like the cigarettes and be happy that I don't! Well of course, there's a no doubt in the fact that chantix have been approved by FDA but it does not comes without side effects. Violent nightmares have manifested themselves into hallucinations for many of those taking the drug. Well it wouldn't be long before these nighttime side effects gave way to much worse.
Chantix side effects are known to include most seriously, severe nausea with up to 30% of people trying to quit smoking using Chantix, having to stop the treatment due to this side effect being so strong. Disturbances of the gut such as constipation, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, excessive indigestion and excessive flatulence have all been mentioned as well as vomiting. Other Chantix side effects are known to include headaches, difficulty sleeping (insomnia), abnormal dreams including nightmares, sleepiness and dizziness.
People have reported other Chantix side effects including a change in their sense of taste a dry mouth and changes in appetite both for food and for sex! They have also reported increased incidences of airway infections, mood swings, tremor and restlessness. Some reported negative side effects of Chantix include nausea, vomiting, sleep disturbance, constipation, flatulence, and hard stool. One reported Chantix side effect that is not necessarily negative is lucid dreaming. From many reports (and from first-hand experience) these lucid dreams are actually pleasant experiences. Some people who have never remembered their dreams before are now remembering their dreams as "weird fun-filled rides" that they say are quite positive. Others have expressed that, although these "rides" can be pleasurable, they can leave them feeling exhausted in the morning.
Keep yourself occupied so that you do not get tempted to start smoking, you could do this by perhaps spending time with family members or friends. You need to be happy for the treatment to be more effective. Exercises will also do you some good however, only those that will not create a health risk for you.
